Athletics, when executed correctly, is one of greatest platforms of youth mentorship. To be able to develop multicultural relationships through shared passions and then channel the life skills manifested through the journey of athletics is a privilege and joy. The analogies between real life situations and athletics are vast. Google provides a complete list of the benefits of athletics, from discipline to the teamwork of being part of something bigger than yourself to Wooden’s success and so much more. For me, it’s about continually learning how to best communicate those benefits so as to maximize their impact and maintain the self-awareness to model them. The emotional journey young adults experience in athletics challenges me to discover innovative ways to guide them through failures and the persistence, grit, and perseverance required to keep moving forward. Positive athletic leadership instills solutions-based problem solving, fosters intrinsic motivation over fear, and ingrains lifelong habits of gratitude. Ultimately, the most enjoyable part is showing athletes patience, honesty, and empathy in ways many of them have never experienced before. Keep it fun; it’s a game.

Long term, forget about winning a title, having a trophy, or medals. It gives confidence to all the people in the program that if they believe in something, have a vision for it, set a goal for it, and work really hard. It doesn’t mean it will happen, but it can happen.
